ECWA Hospital Newsletter April 2006
Introduction
We are grateful for all the positive feedback we have received from you since our last letter. We particularly appreciate our pioneer Medical Director, Dr George Campion, who is eagerly using his influence to mobilise support for the hospital.
A new drive to help the poor
Since my last letter we have implemented some measures that will enable us respond to the challenge of caring for the majority of our patients who lack the means to afford good quality health care. We are of the view that the hospital will gradually wither into irrelevance if it remains inaccessible to the majority of the people in our community.
Therefore we have taken a step of faith since January to decrease the cost of many of our services, in some cases by as much as 50 percent. Furthermore, our records show that from January 2006 till the end of March 2006, we have provided financial subsidies for patients’ hospital bills by as much as 324,000 naira ($US2500). This money will mostly end up as bad debt for the hospital. We however commit ourselves to providing care to anyone who chooses to come to us irrespective of their financial status.
Patient satisfaction and customer service programme
The hospital since the beginning of this year has commenced a patient satisfaction and customer service programme. It is designed to equip our staff with the knowledge and skills that will enable them provide high quality, patient friendly and Christ honouring services. The programme includes patient satisfaction surveys, lectures and training sessions organised in-house for staff. In the course of a series of meetings held with the staff last month we discussed the topic, “The customer is always right”. The response from the staff has been encouraging and we trust God that this programme will go a long way in raising the standard of our service delivery.
Residency Programme
It is with pleasure and thanks to God that I announce the success of our resident, Dr (Mrs) Ehalaiye in the Part 1 professional examination organised by the West African College of Physicians on the 3rd and 4th April 2006. This is the first major examination by any of our residents since the hospital was granted accreditation to train Family Physicians in December 2003.
Appreciation and appeal
Once again we thank all of you for your interest and support. I am available to provide more information about Dr Campion’s fundraising drive on behalf of the hospital. I can also provide details about our most pressing needs at your request. We appreciate your encouragement and prayers.
Yours in Christ,
Dr Duro Ehalaiye
Medical Director
