Last night at an SIM dinner we discussed some of the things we like about Nigeria. Here are a few:

  • beautiful countryside with green mountains and amazing rock formations,
  • happy and hospitable people,
  • praying Christians who believe in miracles and a God who answers prayer,
  • rich traditional music sung by choreographed choirs that rock the church in praise to God,
  • food with spices and seasonings that are delicious,
  • creative and energetic people who are resourceful with little and thankful for what they have,
  • ambitious young people desiring a better education, and
  • people whose faith in God on the roads as they drive has increased our own faith in the sovereignty of God and improved our prayer life!

What do you eat in Nigeria? One missionary's answer.

We have been asked this question so many times, and as promised, I'll answer it here. Fortunately, because we both work very full time jobs, we have a sweet gal who comes to help us prepare food three mornings/week. Sarah bleaches all our fruits and vegetables [to kill germs, not to whiten the food! -- editor], keeps us stocked with homemade English muffins, tortillas, and other yummies. (She also spoils Jon with chocolate chip cookies. But since we are about out of chocolate chips—can't find them here—he'll be out of luck soon.) Jollof rice is our staple. It is made with stewed tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans or peas, spices, a hint of lemon and rice, of course. Kinda like a cross between fried rice and Mexican rice. … read more

What is shopping like in Nigeria?

Market in JosThere are many open markets with little stalls selling almost anything you can imagine. There are also small shops that sell imported items like cereal, ketchup and canned goods. Dorothy has trained our house helpers to can tomatoes and fruit sauces and she freezes meats, corn and other vegetables. We buy eggs in one place, meat in another and so on so shopping takes all morning. --Bill Ardill

What language do people speak in Nigeria (in Jos)?

Nigeria is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of languages, with about 500 different languages in several major language families with little or nothing in common. The official national language is English but many or most average people without secondary education speak and understand little or no English. There are three other major languages, Hausa, Ibo, and Yoruba, corresponding to the north, southeast, and southwest regions respectively. Most people speak at least one of these, often in addition to a “mother language” from a smaller ethnic group.

How big is Jos?

The population of Jos is around 750,000 to one million. Including the southern suburb of Bukuru, the greater Jos area is about 7 km by 25 km (5 by 15 miles) in extent.
