Line 12: Allah ya kai mu (Allā̀h yà kai mù)

This sentence means “May God take us [there],” asking for God to bring us to that point, in this case “tomorrow,” since the other speaker had said “sai gṑbe”, or “see you tomorrow.”

  • Listen several times to the tone and flow.
  • Try imitating the tone and rhythm in the “la-da-da” or humming voice.
  • Sketch the tone contour of the sentence.
  • Listen to and repeat the phrase until you match the speaker closely.
Cultural aside: Nigerians of all faiths tend to be much more aware than Westerners of God's sovereignty and our dependence on him. They also encounter death far more often and unexpectedly. It's common for morning prayers to begin with something like, “Lord, we thank you that we are still among the living today after many have been taken from this life.”
