Exercise: Same or Different Tone? (1)

Picture of donkey Jake, “The real jakin Kano”Listen to these pairs of words. Do they have the same tone pattern, or different ones? Click on the “same tone” or “different tone” button. You should keep practicing until your score marker, the donkey, reaches the “Jakin Kano”* level (it will be highlighted). So much emphasis on tone might seem excessive, but the ability to recognize or “hear” tone is one of the most critical pieces in helping you become a real “jakin Kano.”

If you find the scoring display distracting, just click on the button at its left to move it out of the way. Click again to see it.

*“Jakin Kano” = a Kano donkey, a phrase used to praise someone who speaks Hausa well, “just like a Kano donkey!”
